Bangalore: A couple allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves on Monday at their house in Saraswathinagar in Bapuji Layout under the Vijayanagar police station limits. The couple, Sudha (26) and Nagesh (37), are survived by their daughter, Monisha (5). The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when Sudha’s father, Veere Gowda, came to their house, and hearing his granddaughter’s wails, broke open the door. Nagesh used to work as a despatch clerk at a factory in Whitefield. K.V. Sharat Chandra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), said that after Sudha found that Nagesh had hung himself, she reportedly tried to strangle Monisha. Believing her unconscious daughter was dead, Sudha allegedly hanged herself. The couple did not leave behind a suicide note. Dowry harassmentFour persons were arrested by the Tavarekere police on Tuesday on charges of dowry harassment. The police said that Ramesh (21), a part-time real estate agent, allegedly doused his wife Meenakshi (19) in kerosene and set her on fire at their home in KSRTC Layout in Madhavanagar. The police said ever since the couple got married a year ago, Ramesh had been reportedly pestering her for more dowry. Fed up, Meenakshi went to live with her brother in Kamakshipalya. However, Ramesh brought her back on Monday saying he would not harass her anymore. The police said that Ramesh and his family reportedly picked up a fight with Meenakshi, allegedly set her ablaze and told their neighbours that Meenakshi had committed suicide. Her brother, who suspected foul play, filed a dowry harassment case. The police have arrested Ramesh, his father Shivananjaiah, mother Gowramma and brother Basavaraj.
