Orissa violence

The Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s charge that for years Christians were being targeted in the Kandhamal district of Orissa and the State government failed to take adequate steps to protect the minority community has been vindicated by the fact that scores of churches have been damaged. It is not enough for the Centre to deploy CRPF companies and seek a report on the incidents from the State government. It should ensure that the secular nature of the country and communal harmony are maintained in the sensitive tribal district.

S. Nallasivan,

We Indians are proud of our pluralistic culture. Unity in diversity holds all religions together. The attack on the churches cannot be justified on any ground. The National Commission for Minorities and the Governor should urge the State government to act swiftly to bring the vandalising elements to book.
