Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Solar energy

The editorial "The shine in solar energy" (Dec. 27) has rightly pointed out that it is time India got serious about solar energy. As a first step, the Prime Minister should set up a solar energy commission on the same lines as the Atomic Energy Commission and ISRO, with a well-defined, time-bound target.

I spent my childhood in a remote village which had no connection to the power grid. I had to read and write using kerosene lamps which created many health problems for me. There are thousands of villages in India which have little chance of being connected to the power grid in the conventional way. Solar photovoltaic cells could be an effective and cheap way to light up these areas. Apart from being cost effective, solar energy has the additional advantages of being clean and silent. Instead of silicon-based photovoltaic cells which are expensive, researchers have now been attracted to organic cells for their flexibility and low cost. Even though there is an initial capital cost, if done the right way, solar energy can modernise rural India.

Minimal loss and maximum output make solar energy the best bet. The demand for more energy is set to increase with every passing year. As a first step, solar panels can be set up at major corporation locations to serve their thermal and electrical energy needs. If the Indian semiconductor industry can rise to the challenge, solarising India is not an unachievable target.
