Unconscionable

The unconscionable assassination of Benazir Bhutto is a great setback to Pakistan’s democratic forces. It is the duty of the Pakistan establishment to ensure stability at this hour of crisis. Its neighbours should help the country overcome the shock.

But to achieve long-lasting peace, the people of Pakistan should resolve to re-establish democracy. This alone can be a fitting tribute to all those who have lost their lives in pursuit of democracy.

Benazir’s untimely death is a great loss for South Asia. A leader who struggled hard to restore democracy has been brutally killed. Her death reminds one of Christopher Marlowe’s words: “Cut is the branch that might have grown full straight.”
