Benazir’s assassination in nuclear-armed Pakistan has everyone worried about India’s security. In fact, Pakistan’s instability is cited as one reason why India requires nuclear weapons. The question is: can India rely on a doctrine of credible minimum deterrence to avoid a nuclear attack from Pakistan? Not if Pakistan degenerates along the lines of the Taliban-led Afghanistan. The only way out is a nuclear weapons-free India and Pakistan. India at least need not fear a nuclear attack that no amount of its own weapons can deter.
