Proposals to cover areas without streetlights discussed

CHENNAI: Proposals to cover areas without streetlights and provide basic amenities to municipal schools were among the important issues discussed by the Avadi council that met on Monday.

Streets in areas including Tirumullaivoyal, Cholambedu, Kamaraj Nagar and Paruthipattu Colony would be provided streetlights at a cost of about Rs.47 lakh under the MLA fund soon.

Moreover, the Avadi Municipality High School and Avadi Municipality Primary School would get furniture and other amenities worth Rs.17 lakh.

Councillors recalled that nearly 20 development works, worth Rs.20 crore, were taken up in the past one year. Besides the water supply scheme sanctioned to provide 15,000 house connections, tenders had been called for to improve four slum areas under the Basic Services to the Urban Poor project. The project would allow beneficiaries to obtain grant to construct or repair their house.Municipal chairman ‘Victory’ Mohan said about 15,000 families were expected to benefit from the project.

The 60 resolutions passed by the council included approval to call for tenders to lay cement roads, culverts and storm water drains at a cost of Rs.52.6 lakh.

Stormwater drains would be constructed in Babu Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar and Angalamman Koil Street in Ward 28.

Ambattur council meeting

The Ambattur council that met on Monday decided to call for tenders to mechanically segregate organic waste from non-degradable waste and put an end to the long-pending garbage disposal problem in the municipality.

The council members conceded to a proposal to procure 10 sieving machines to segregate the 200 metric tonnes of garbage collected in Athipattu dumping yard daily.

The project would facilitate reduction in garbage collected and yield revenue to the local body. The council has decided to give priority to non-governmental organisations to carry out the work.

The capital cost for procuring machines and other facilities for Rs.1.2 crore project would be provided as loan from Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited.
