You can achieve anything as long as you are passionate about it, he says He joined IBM research centre in 1981 VISAKHAPATNAM: It was an enlightening session for students who gathered to listen to Chief Scientist of IBM India C. Mohan at the Children’s Science Congress, being held as part of the 95th Indian Science Congress, at Andhra University on Sunday. “You can achieve anything you want as long as you are passionate about it,” Dr. Mohan told the young aspiring scientists. Today, unfortunately, job evaluation is done based on money considerations. This mindset needs to be changed. Parents and educational institutes should instil a sense of excitement about science among the students and initiate them towards research fields. There is a lot happening at the forefront of scientific research, he told the students. He also spoke about his personal experiences in IBM and his educational background. Encouraging the students coming from rural areas he said that if you are passionate about your subject, such factors are never a hindrance. “Even I studied in a Tamil medium school and later joined IIT Madras,” he said. Primary inventorDr. Mohan joined IBM Almaden Research Center in 1981. He is the primary inventor of the ARIES family of recovery and concurrency control methods and the industry-standard Presumed Abort commit protocol. He has been an editor of VLDB Journal, and Distributed and Parallel Databases.
