NAMAKKAL: Students of Arignar Anna Government Arts College blocked the traffic on Mohanur Road here on Monday protesting against the arrest of a student for his alleged involvement in a theft case.

The windscreen of a bus was damaged as stones were pelted during the protest.

Police sources said a third year student of the college, who was working as a part-time employee in a mobile phone showroom here, was arrested on charges of stealing cell phones and re-charge coupons worth Rs. 8,000 based on a complaint from the shop owner.

Rally taken

Students took out a massive rally here on Monday to spread awareness on road safety.

Collector G. Sundaramurthi flagged off the rally at the Namakkal Boys Government Higher Secondary School.

The rally, organised by the Namakkal District Police, passed through important thoroughfares in the town.

Traffic rules

Over 3,000 students from 20 schools and colleges participated in the rally and raised slogans asking the vehicle users to strictly adhere to traffic rules.

Handbills

They also distributed handbills carrying information on road safety. Students stressed the importance of wearing helmets. The number of road accidents could be minimised if all the people followed the road rules, they pointed out.
