A model on ‘Waste water management of dye industry’ prepared by S. Vinoth Kumar, Abdul Rahman and V. Subramanian, all students of Government Higher Secondary School, Lalgudi, has been selected for the south India-level science exhibition to be held at St. John’s Vestry Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Tiruchi. The model was displayed at the 34th Jawaharlal Nehru State-level Science Exhibition conducted by Bharani Park Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Karur. Headmaster of Bharani Park school R. Ravi, assistant headmaster S. Parthasarathy and teachers, Karpagam and Fathima Mary, felicitated the youngsters. Win overall titleThe combined team of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) Sports Hostels and Sports Schools in the boys section and SDAT Sports Hostels (Erode) in the girls section won the overall title at the 50th State-level Republic Day athletic meet conducted by the Department of School Education at Karur recently. Around 1,500 athletes took part in the three-day event held at the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) ground at Kakithapuram. he meet was conducted in under-19, under-17 and under-14 age categories for both boys and girls. B. Azarudeen and P. Anburaja, both from Tiruchi Sports Hostel, bagged the boys’ individual championship in the under-19 and under-14 categories. V. Siva (St. James HSS, Palakurichi) and R. Deivasigamani and A. Sainath (both from NLC Boys Higher Secondary School, Neyveli) shared the individual honour in the under-17 category. R. Kowsalya (PSGR Krishnammal GHSS, Peelamedu) and Christina Durand (St. Patrick’s AI HSS, Chennai) won the girls’ individual crown in the under-19 and under-17 sections. P.S. Vinodhini (Kalaimagal Kalvi Nilayam, Erode) and M. Megala (Government HSS, Oathakalmandapam) shared the honour in the under-14 category. Chief Vigilance Officer, TNPL, and Inspector General of Police C. Sylendra Babu gave away the prizes in the presence of Chief Education Officer Pon. Kumar. Traffic signs explainedAs part of the Road Safety Week celebrations, students of the Road Safety Patrol of Arockiamatha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Karumandapam, sensitised their school mates to traffic rules. Traffic signs and hand symbols were explained to the students, who were also taught to differentiate mandatory, information and cautionary signs. Principal Rev. Fr. S. Baskaran commended the students. Sets new recordS.P.B. Poorviha, a standard X student of Government High School, Sembattur, Pudukottai district, bagged the girls 800m gold in under-17 age category and also set new meet record in the event at the 50th State-level Republic Day athletic meet. She covered the distance in 2 minutes 25.3 seconds. Poorviha performed well in her specialised event (800m) at championships conducted at various levels. Headmaster S. Navaneethan and physical education teacher S. Kandasamy commended the youngster. Bag goldStudents of Srirangam Boys Higher Secondary School won ball badminton gold in the under-19 age category at the State-level Bharathiar Day Games, conducted by the Department of School Education, at Tuticorin recently. The team put up a dominant performance in the tournament winning most of the matches comfortably. Headmaster of the school V. Ramanujam, physical education director R. Vijayakumar and physical education teachers, N. Veeraputhiran and S.V. Chandrasekaran, felicitated the youngsters. Special students excelStudents of Vidivelli, a special school for the mentally challenged, won the overall title at the State-level cultural competition conducted by SBT College of Special Education at Madurai recently. Students from more than 25 special schools in the State took part in the competition. Painting, collage, solo dance, group dance, solo singing and group singing were some of the events conducted at the competition. Vidivelli students performed exceedingly well in most of the events to emerge overall winners. MP N.
