KARUR: Planned hard work, perseverance and self confidence would ensure success not just in school exams, but also in the life beyond that, speakers said at a confidence building workshop here on Tuesday. The occasion was the “Neengalum Saadhikkalaam” programme organised by the Department of School Education. The programme is being organised for the second year for the benefit of students preparing for the SSLC and Plus Two examinations in the district. The aim of the programme is to imbue self-confidence in the candidate to achieve greater things by helping the student plan for the examinations in a proper fashion with the help of resource persons, according to the Collector T.N. Venkatesh. Last year the programme was organised when the examinations were round the corner and gave little time for the candidates to reflect on the merits of the ideas that were sown in their minds. But this year, the authorities had planned well in advance so that the candidates had enough time to reflect on the merits of the topics discussed, said the Collector, who helped initiate the programme. He wanted the programme to be made an annual event in the district. While around 500 students attended last year’s programme, for the current year it has been planned to conduct two programmes _ one each at Karur for the Karur and Aravakurichi taluk students and at Kulithalai for students belonging to the Kulithalai and Krishnarayapuram taluks, Mr. Venkatesh. Karur, perhaps, was the only district where the Department of School Education was conducting such a programme, officials claimed. The programme has as its component apart from confidence-building and capacity-enhancing measures and guest lectures, specific, target-oriented training by teachers with proven credentials such as 100 per cent pass percentage of students. Around dozen teachers with such impeccable credentials were asked to train the hundreds of students in subjects ranging from Tamil to Zoology. Pass percentage upDuring 2005-06, the pass percentage of students in he district in the Plus Two examinations was 77 and in thee subsequent year it rose to 89. With programmes such as “Neengalum Saadhikkalaam”, the pass percentage should touch 100, remarked the Collector. Pointing out that last year, students from Karur district topped the State in Tamil in Plus Two and SSLC exams, Mr. Venkatesh said that this year with the benefit of such programmes students from the district should bag the honours in all subjects, he urged. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
