BHUBANESWAR: Dominance of female dancers in Indian classical dancer arena notwithstanding, male dancers like late Kelucharan Mohapatra and Birju Maharaj have carved out a niche for themselves. And, reversing the trend in Odissi dance that is considered as a predominately feminine dance form, a large contingent of male dancers are emerging as successful professionals. This was the unanimous observation of the speakers who participated in a seminar on male dancers in Odissi here on Tuesday that was hosted by Kelucharan Mohapatra-founded Srjan dance institution. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
