A sigh of relief over bail for Mahanti

Correspondent

CUTTACK: If it were only guarded reactions from the top police brass here on Thursday when Orissa DG rank officer surrendered in a court in Jaipur, the police, staff and family of the beleaguered officer heaved a sigh of relief on Friday when news started reaching here that Mahanti has been granted bail.

The State DGP Gopal Chandra Nanda, who termed the Thursday’s development as ‘unfortunate’, was relieved and relaxed on Friday after Mahanti was granted bail. “This is a welcome news and I am sure the family members of Mahanti must have relieved over the Friday’s development”, Mr Nanda told media persons here.

At the same time, the staff and members of the State police too welcomed the Friday’s news from Jaipur and said their Saheb was innocent. “I am sure the DG-saheb would come out unscathed because he is absolutely a good soul,” said a police. Another staff member went to the extent of saying that Mahanti-saheb is one of the best IPS officers in the State.

Meanwhile, the Cuttack police, who were entrusted to execute the NBW against the senior IPS officer, were also relieved when Mahanti surrendered after remaining elusive for more than three months. After searching for the DGP, who was in the meantime placed under suspension, the Cuttack police had informed a court in Jaipur last month that the senior cop was still elusive.
