TIRUCHENGODE: A 16-year-old school student on Thursday afternoon shot at a 53-year-old woman,K. Lokanayaki, at her sports shop on North Car Street here.

The boy pumped a bullet into the rear of Lokanayaki’s left shoulder. She is under treatment at a private clinic.

According to the Tiruchengode town police, the boy, around 12.30 p.m. went to Sriram Sports, which is on the first floor of a shopping complex, looking for a cricket bat. He picked one off the shelf and took it to Lokanayaki, who was at the counter.

While trying to pull his purse out of the pocket, the boy landed a few coins on the floor.

As the woman tried to pick up the coins, the boy drew his revolver and fired at her, the police said. As she fell, Lokanayaki raised an alarm, following which shopkeepers from the neighbourhood caught the boy who tried to flee. They later handed him over to the police.

As for the motive behind the crime, the police said the boy had been to the shop a few days ago looking for a cricket bat, when Lokanayaki scolded and even “abused him using unparliamentary words” for rummaging through the shelves for long and not buying one.

The boy, who took strong exception to the woman’s behaviour, wanted to settle scores.

The police said the boy picked up the London-made firearm, the licence for which is under scrutiny, from his house in Modamangalam in Tiruchengode rural police limits.

It belonged to his grandfather M. M. Kandasamy, a DMK functionary.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Government Hospital, Erode, said the bullet had entered the woman’s body through the inter scapula region on the rear of the shoulder and lay 10 cm inside.
