BU to give away 198 gold medals

Bangalore: The Bangalore University will give away 198 gold medals at its 43rd Annual Convocation scheduled on Saturday.

Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath told presspersons here on Thursday that this year, 198 gold medals were shared by 150 students.

Two students – Krupa A. from the Centre of Kannada Studies, and Chaitra H.S. from the Department of Chemistry – had secured nine gold medals each. Shruthi S., a B.Sc. student from Mount Carmel College, and Sriharsha K., a B.E. (Mechanical) student from University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, bagged eight gold medals each. The university would be awarding 177 Ph.D. degrees in the faculties of arts, commerce and management, education, engineering, law, medicine and science. Two students – Margaret Irudaya Geetha D., a B.Ed. student from CMR Institute of Education, and Jahnavi N. from the Department of Physics – have secured six gold medals each.

Four students have bagged five gold medals each – Anusha S., Sheeba Nancy C., Smitha H.N., and Manasa A.N. “As many as 40,221 students were eligible to participate in the annual convocation this year. However, only 29919 students applied. The university will give away graduation certificates to those students,” he said.

As many as 5,620 students from the faculty of Arts, 73 from communication, 8,812 from commerce, 4,448 from education, 864 from engineering, 1,477 from law, one from oncology, 35 from medicine, 8,587 from science, and two from technology will be given graduation certificates at the annual convocation.

The former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will be the chief guest and will deliver the convocation address. Governor and Chancellor of the university Rameshwar Thakur will preside over the convocation.

This year, four persons would be conferred honorary degrees.

Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan will be given LLD, former Mayor and freedom fighter G. Narayana and former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University T.R. Jayarama will be conferred D.Litt, and former Director of Indian Institute of Science Goverdhan Mehta will be given D.Sc. degrees.
