Stalin inaugurated improvement works, including the setting up of a two-level underground parking facility for two-wheelers, at an estimated cost of Rs.9 crore at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus at Koyambedu on Saturday. T.R. Srinivasan, vice-chairman, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), said the two-level parking facility in front of the bus terminus, along the 100 feet Road, would be completed in 18 months. An arch would be constructed at the entry point for outstation buses on Nesapakkam Salai at a cost of Rs.35 lakh in four months. The half-km walkway from the entry point to the bus stand would be roofed at a cost of Rs.30 lakh in four months. The roads in the parking area of the Koyambedu wholesale market complex would be concreted at a cost of Rs.2 crore, he said. CMDA Chairman and Information Minister Parithi Illamvazhuthi said the ground above the two-level parking would be maintained as a park. Mayor M. Subramanian said the Corporation had acquired some 4.3 acres opposite the bus terminus, alongside the 100 feet Road, for being developed as a park. A compound wall would be constructed shortly at an estimated cost of Rs.28 lakh. Mr. Stalin said the parking project was based on a study that projected the demand for parking to touch 3,000 two-wheelers a day in the coming years. The levels would be at the depths of 10 feet and 20 feet and constructed in such a manner as to keep the structure safe from minor earthquakes, pressure of the water table or the adjoining soil. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
