‘Councillors are the first ladder of politics’ ‘From this level they can only rise higher’ NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president J.P. Agarwal on Monday urged his party’s councillors to work towards a Congress victory in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Addressing a gathering at Azad Park near Town Hall, Mr. Agarwal appealed to the councillors to devote themselves to various development works and unite themselves to strengthen the Congress prior to the elections. Emphasising the need to carry out public service, Mr. Agarwal said: “Councillors are the first ladder of politics and from this level they can only rise higher. Renowned freedom fighter Aruna Asaf Ali was the first Mayor of the Capital, former Union Ministers Sham Nath and H.K.L. Bhagat, and Mahinder Singh Saathi all started out at this level.” All councillors should work hard for their full five-year tenure, he added. Leader of the Opposition in the MCD J.K. Sharma also appealed to the gathering to fulfil their responsibilities towards the public with loyalty and hard work. “The faith bestowed on councillors by the DPCC president should spur them to work with greater efficiency. They should attend the maximum number of meetings and improve their performance accordingly.” Former Delhi Mayors Farhad Suri, Ashok Kumar Jain, A.R. Verma and Satbir Singh were among those present on the occasion. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
