Staff Reporter

They will be sold at colleges in four districts

Sales target fixed at Rs. One crore

MADURAI: Handloom weavers in the State have found a source of support from students to sell their products, thanks to the coming together of Madurai Kamaraj University and Cooptex.

The Republic Day on January 26 would see students of the university and its affiliated college selling handloom products as part of National Service Scheme (NSS) activities.

A meeting of Principals was held in the university on Tuesday to seek their support in the sale of Cooptex products among family members of students, staff and the general public.

The formal launch of ‘Kaitharikku Kaikoduppom’ programme, undertaken at the behest of Chief Minister, was presided over by Registrar I. Singaram and attended by Cooptex officials, Syndicate members and heads of departments.

““Cotton saris, bed sheets, dhotis and other handloom products will be sold with the help of university and colleges,” said P. Esakki, Regional Manager, Cooptex, addressing the Principals.

Three colleges that make the highest sales would receive prizes from the Chief Minister.

Mr. Esakki said that campus sales at the university would start on January 25.

Cooptex products will be sold in university-affiliated colleges in Madurai, Theni, Dindigul and Virudhunagar districts. The sales target is fixed at Rs. One crore.

The stock will reach the colleges before the Republic Day.
