New BG line between Karaikal and Salem proposed

R. Rajaram

TIRUCHI: Considering the huge cargo movement following execution of major industrial and infrastructure projects in Karaikal and the rising tourist inflow there, a new broad gauge line between Karaikal and Salem has been proposed.

The proposed line via Mayiladuthurai, Gangaikondacholapuram, Jayamkondam, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Attur will connect four district headquarters, Salem, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karaikal. Puducherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has written to Railway Minister Lalu Prasad requesting him to arrange a “techno-economic feasibility survey” for the proposed line and make a reference in this regard in the Railway Budget. The Government of Puducherry has also enclosed particulars justifying the potential of the new line.

The proposed line would link important pilgrim centres, including the Chola temple at Gangaikondacholapuram and the Tirunallar Saneeswara Bhagavan Temple, Karaikal Collector N. Vasantha Kumar told TheHindu over phone on Wednesday.
