CPI(M) activist hacked to death

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: In another incident of political violence, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) activist was hacked to death by suspected Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists at Nangarathupeedika, near Kodiyeri, under the Chokli police station limits here on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Jijesh (27). He succumbed to his injuries while being taken to a hospital in Kozhikode.

He was the fourth CPI(M) activist killed in political violence in the district in the last three months. M. Dhanesh, a CPI(M) activist, had been murdered at Azhikode here on January 12. Two party activists had also fallen victim to attacks by alleged RSS activist in the district in November last. The police said Jijesh was returning home with his two associates at around 1.30 a.m. after helping a neighbour in connection with a wedding ceremony when he was attacked by a 10-member gang. The duo accompanying him fled the spot, when he came under attack. The CPI(M) observed a day-long hartal in Thalassery and nearby areas on Sunday to protest against the killing.
