Call for attempts to enlist as many voluntary donors as possible
Naidu wants promotion of sense of service in people
HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Governor N.D. Tiwari has appealed to all healthy individuals, aged between 18 and 60 years, to make blood donation “a pious duty to be performed every three months without fail”.
Inaugurating the NTR Memorial Trust’s Virtual Blood Bank here on Tuesday, he said youth in general and students of higher education in particular were the best sources. Mr. Tiwari wanted rigorous attempts to enlist and retain as many students as possible as voluntary blood donors.
Need for safe blood“With the ever-increasing population, childbirths, accidents, terrorism and diseases, the need for safe blood in the health sector for treating patients is also increasing proportionately,” he observed.
Turning nostalgic, he recalled having met N. T. Rama Rao several times in New Delhi during the National Development Council and other meetings.
He always found him to be “full of verve and vigour”.
N. Chandrababu Naidu, TDP president and the managing trustee, said there was acute shortage of blood units. He called for promoting a sense of service in people, particularly youth.
Mr. Naidu wanted the rich to donate ten per cent of their earnings for improving the lot of the poor.
He said the strength of the NTR Trust-run school would be increased to 1,000 next year. The Trust would also launch, in a big way, training programmes for upgrading the skills of unemployed youth.
According to former Minister Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, the blood bank would make blood available anywhere and at anytime in the State.
Trust CEO K. Umesh said the blood units would be provided free of cost to the poor, including transfusion for thalassaemia patients.
