Kakinada: The three-day centenary celebrations of the District Collector’s office commenced here on Friday, with a call to protect the monument which had been a coveted seat of governance. Revenue administration in the district has a history of more than 200 years while the Collector office building has just completed 100 years of its existence. From those heady days of the colonial empires, 140 Collectors have served the district, including those who ruled the combined Godavari district under the Madras Presidency. ``Its is a privilege to be one among the long list of officers who served the district, that too in a monument which is an architectural wonder besides being a source of relief for those seeking answers of their problems,” said District Collector M Subrahmanyam. Model districtMr. Subrahmanyam said it was a coincidence that he had undergone IAS training in East Godavari in 1982 and is now at the helm of affairs in the same place. He stated that East Godavari was a model for other districts in matters of administration and hoped that it would hold to its place of pride for a long time to come. As regards development, Mr. Subrahmanyam said the district was poised to achieve all-round development by virtue of the existing industries and new ones coming up in and around the district headquarters. While praising the Collector for his keen interest in giving a facelift to his office building, Additional District Judge B Nagamaruti Sarma asked him to initiate the renovation of the court building in Kakinada also, saying that it was not easy for him to get it done through his department (the judiciary) which is obviously bogged down by funds constraint. ZP Chairman Ch Venugopala Krishna, Joint Collector GSRKR Vijay Kumar, SP B Sreenivasulu, MLC N Sesha Reddy, MLA D. Venkateswarulu and others were present. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
