A sentence in the first paragraph of a report “Undersea cable breakdown hits Internet-based services” (February 1, 2008, page 1) was: “As tension gripped BPO firms, service industry and individuals due to the snag in their Internet connections and ILD services, the Centre swung into action on Thursday ….” There were a few queries on what the expansion of ILD is. It is “International Long Distance telephone services”.
The second paragraph in a report “‘Steps needed to check suicides on vessels’” (February 1, 2008) was: “Mr. [D.T.] Joseph, [former Secretary and Advisor, Union Ministry of Shipping], a guest of honour at the inaugural function of the World Shipping Forum 2008 being held here [in Chennai] from Thursday, pointed to the suicide of 129 persons onboard in 2007 as against 96 in 2006.” Mr. Joseph clarifies that what he had said was that there was one suicide in 2005, two cases in 2006 and three in 2007. The total number of deaths, and not suicides, on ships in 2007 was 129. The reasons for the other deaths were natural causes, accidents, and cases of vessel sinking. He had also said that the increase of cases of suicide, from one to three, needed to be addressed as a human resource deployment problem.
The heading of an item “SAIL to supply equipment to HEC” (“Snippets – Business” page, January 31, 2008) should have been “HEC to supply equipment to SAIL”. The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ranchi-based Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) for supply of equipment for its ongoing modernisation and expansion programme. HEC will supply the equipment. (HEC was set up in 1958 to manufacture and supply capital equipment and machine tools for core sector industries, especially steel.)
