Gujarat model

This refers to the article “The humbug called Gujarat model” (Feb. 2). It is ridiculous for a section of the BJP to assume that the so-called Gujarat model of victory will yield fruit in the Lok Sabha election. What is successful in a small corner of the country cannot be successful everywhere. The Gujarat victory was reaped on the graveyard of untold hate campaign and deep-seated vengeance against the minorities. Narendra Modi’s development mantra will not work much longer in the State.

Our country needs a credible leader who possesses the noble qualities of far-sightedness, acceptance, forgiveness, brotherhood and magnanimity. Mr. Modi is the wrong man and I am sure the people’s collective conscience will agree.

It is becoming more and more evident that no State or region can represent the nation as a whole, when it comes to the voting pattern in the elections. Regional issues and loyalties continue to give a larger role for regional parties at the national level.

If, as the Gujarat government claims, the Gujarat model is about “a strong, honest and efficient leadership; transparent governance that nurtures innovations; and a vision to make development a people’s movement,” what is wrong in emulating it? Aren’t these the things needed for any country?

The post-Godhra riots, like the anti-Sikh riots, are undoubtedly a blemish on our nation. But I am sure the BJP, which talks about emulating the Gujarat model, or citizens who think that Mr. Modi’s idea of development can be extended to the country, are not talking about recreating Godhra and its aftermath. It is time we stopped criticising the people’s verdict and started looking at the positives of the Modi regime.
