Sankar hogs the limelight

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: P. Sankar of SN College Chempazhanthy hogged the limelight on the first day of the Kerala University inter-collegiate athletics meet at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium here on Monday.

Sankar, the all-India inter-University champion with a personal best of 2.01m, was expected to break M.B. Sathyanandan’s 30-year-old mark in high jump. The first year B.A. Sociology student didn’t disappoint and as he cleared 2.01m he entered the record books.

Sankar had left the field way behind as he warmed up with 1.90m and later equalled the existing mark by clearing 1.99m. However, Sankar’s attempt to clear 2.08m failed.

Priya’s distinction

P.K. Priya of SN College Kollam became the fastest woman by winning the 100m in 12.2s and broke Minimol Joseph’s 17-year-old record.

Renjitha of SN College Chempazhanthy won a double by winning both the 1500m and 5000m events. Renjitha in fact set a new mark in 5000m by breaking Bindhumol’s eight-year-old record.

The day’s last record was set by Niveditha Narayanan, who bettered her own record, in women’s discus throw.
