Don’t tarnish Mumbai image, says Patil

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Four days after disturbances rocked Mumbai as north Indians were targeted by Raj Thackeray’s political outfit, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil appealed to the people of the city to maintain the peace and harmony.

In a statement here on Wednesday, his first since the disturbances erupted on Sunday, Mr. Patil said the State government was asked to “see that no individual or group of persons is intimidated, attacked or its properties are targeted and damaged.”

Provide protection

It was asked to take action against miscreants without delay and to provide protection to those who might need it or might be vulnerable.

“Mumbai all through its history has drawn people from far and near and its people are well known for their broad-mindedness and hospitality. They should see that this reputation of the city is not allowed to be tarnished in any way,” said Mr. Patil, who hails from Maharashtra.
