Exhibition to promote floriculture

NEW OPPORTUNITIES: One of the displays at the flower exhibition that began at the Horticulture Department in Chitradurga on Friday.

Chitradurga: A three-day flower show organised by the Department of Horticulture began here on Friday with a large number of flowers from various regions of the district on display.

The event is being organised by the department for the last 17 years. The vast campus in which the department is housed has been converted into a flower field. To make the event more spectacular, miniature models of animals, made up of flowers, have been installed at various places. The entrance has been specially designed by installing statues of Krishna and Radha, surrounded by flowers which include Cockscomb, Salvia, Celosia and cut-roses.

“We are presenting over 30 varieties of flowers grown in the district. For special attraction, we have brought flowers from Udhagamandalam (Ooty) as well. These flowers are grown only in that region, since the temperature of the place suits their growth,” said Senior Assistant Director of the Horticulture Department D.T. Shivanandappa here on Friday. Elaborating on the event, he said over 20 types of Bonsai plants, an equal number of indoor plants, 15 types of vegetables and 20 types of fruits were on display. A special garden to display cactus plants had been prepared. He said the objective of the event was not only to provide people with a visual spectacle but also to promote floriculture in the district. “Through the event we wish to project that in Chitradurga, although a dry place, floriculture can be developed to ensure economic stability of farmers,” he said. Mr. Shivanandappa said that over 100 farmers were participating in the event. The exhibition will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
