Environmentalist picks holes in Polavaram design

Kakinada: The Polavaram project has more costs than benefits and it is susceptible to failure due to ‘under-designing’, wherein the storage capacity, spillway and backwaters are not properly planned for the future. It is also dangerous for the people and crops in Godavari delta as the possibility of the dam breaking cannot be ruled out due to excessive flood discharge than anticipated,, according to Prof. T. Shivaji Rao of the Department of Environmental Studies, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam. He was speaking at a workshop on ‘Environmental challenges and perspectives in Godavari region’ on Friday.
