Improvement: Additional building for the Manamelkudi GH under construction.

PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 11 hospitals in the district will soon have additional infrastructure facilities that range from maternity block to out-patient department and from in-patient ward to kitchen block and ambulance shed, on need-specific basis.

The work, taken up under the first phase of the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project at a cost of about Rs.14.05 crore, is nearing completion at all but one centres. The work, which commenced towards the close of 2006, has almost complied with the deadline of 14–15 months. The original estimate for these work was Rs.12.74 crore. But, the State Government had released an additional Rs.1.31 crore in view of the cost escalation, official sources told The Hindu.

The Government taluk hospital in Manamelkudi, a coastal village about 70 km from here, is one of the hospitals to get facilities through the scheme. The ground floor of 1,000 square metre area houses a labour room and an out-patient department, while the X-Ray chamber, scanning unit, Siddha and dental wings, are accommodated in the first floor over an equal area. A mortuary unit and an ambulance shed at this hospital are other major facilities at this hospital for which the construction is on.

Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, T. Prakash, said that the hospitals would be handed over to the Health Department by the end of this month. Work at the Ranee’s Hospital would be completed within two or three months.
