HYDERABAD: A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre, Thailand, and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) here to establish linkages for early warning arrangement, preparedness and mitigation of coastal hazards, particularly early tsunami warning. A Rs.125-crore National Tsunami Early Warning System was established at INCOIS recognising the imperative to install such a system for mitigation of oceanographic disasters that pose a threat to 400 million people living across the country’s coastal belt.Tsunamigenic zones that threaten the coast have been identified by considering the historical tsunamis, earthquakes , location of the area relative to a fault and also tsunami modelling. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
