‘Name railway station after Sangolli Rayanna’

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The newly formed Kranthiveera Sangolli Rayanna Hitarakshana Samithi has demanded that the Bangalore City Railway Station be named after freedom fighter Sangolli Rayanna.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, office-bearers of the samithi said that the demand had been pending for long.

They suggested that one of the residential layouts in Bangalore also be named after Rayanna.

They demanded that the birth place of Rayanna and also Nandawadi village, where he was hanged by the British, should be declared as a historical place.

The tree from which Rayanna was hanged and the surrounding area should be declared as a national heritage site, they said.

Samithi president Venkatesh Murthy alleged that the government had failed to show due respect to Rayanna by taking up programmes to create public awareness on his contribution to the freedom struggle.

He suggested that his birth anniversary and martyr day should be observed as special days.

The samithi would be inaugurated formally in Bangalore on Friday, he added.
