Punjab women emerge triumphant

JALANDHAR: Punjab won the overall team trophy in the National Sports Festival for women as the group III competitions ended here on Sunday.

Group I and II were held earlier at Madurai and Thane respectively.

Punjab and Tamil Nadu tied with 20 points each in the overall championships, but Punjab was adjudged the winner as it had one two silver medals to Tamil Nadu’s one. Both got two gold medals. Delhi won the third place.

Punjab also won the overall championship in group III with 15 points. Bengal finished second while Haryana and Chattisgarh were joint third.

Haryana routed Punjab 6-0 in the hockey final while Chattisgarh beat Delhi 57-47 in the basketball final.

Karnataka won the third place in hockey beating Delhi 7-2, while Punjab took the third place in basketball beating Maharashtra 45-22.

In gymnastics, Meenakshi of Punjab won five golds, including the team championship.

Punjab Minister for Sports and Youth Services Gulzar Singh Ranike gave away the prizes. Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, Advisor to Chief Minister, Punjab, was the guest of honour on the occasion.

Punjab Police beats Ahbab Club

Punjab Police, Jalandhar, beat Ahbab Club 3-0 in a group ‘A’ league match of the fourth Lt. Governor’s Cup DDA football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi on Monday. Harshdeep Singh, Amandeep Singh Batra and Harpreet Singh scored.

In another match in the same group, New Delhi Heroes recorded a similar 3-0 triumph over Peerless Sports Club, Kolkata. Amjad Hussain, Baba Tunde and Gyan Moyon found the target.

Brace by Lakhwinder

Two goals by Lakhwinder Singh helped DAV College, Jalandhar, beat Sikh Regimental Centre, Ramgarh, 2-1 after trailing by a goal at halftime in the fourth Oriental Bank Maharaja Ranjit Singh hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium, New Delhi on Monday.

Harwinder Singh had put the Ramgarh team ahead with a penalty corner conversion in the 21st minute.

In another match, Army XI defeated Northern Railway 2-0, following the goals by D. Mahadik and Anil Kumar Ekka.
