Soya Sakthi, St. Joseph’s ‘A’ win titles

Chennai: Soya Sakthi, Coimbatore, and St. Joseph’s College ‘A’ won the men’s and women’s championships respectively in the St. Joseph’s College annual senior State-level ball badminton tournament which concluded on Sunday. The Coimbatore outfit beat Roots, Chennai, 29-23, 29-18 in the final match to take the top honours.

In the women’s section, St. Joseph’s ‘A’ beat Vel Srinivas College 29-13, 29-27 in the crucial match of the semifinal league.

Ezhilarasan, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Badminton Association, gave away the prizes, in the presence of Babu Manoharan, Director, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering.

Men: TNPL, Karur bt Roots, Chennai, 22-29, 29-25, 29-24; IOB bt Soya Sakthi 29-14, 23-29, 29-19; Soya Sakthi bt Roots 29-23, 29-18. Final positions: 1. Soya Sakthi, 2. IOB, 3. TNPL, Karur, 4. Roots, Chennai.

M.A. College posts win

M.A. College (Kothamangalam) outplayed Jamal Mohammed College (Tiruchi) 3-1 in a first round league match of the Rev. Fr. Murphy Trophy memorial football tournament, organised by Loyola College, at the college grounds here on Monday. Shiyomon (2) and Rajheesh (1) scored for MA College. Ramanan netted one for Jamal Mohd.

Match drawn

Nethaji SC and Madras Sporting Union played out a goalless draw in a CFA senior division league match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday.

Challengers Union defeated HVF 3-0 in a first division match. Md. Zareeth (34th and 69th minute) and Vigneswaran (58th) were the scorers.

Double for Vignesh

Vignesh Prabhu bagged the boys’ under-12 and 14 titles in the Nungambakkam Tennis Club State-ranking tournament at the Club premises here on Sunday.

Thanmay advances

S. Thanmay Reddy rallied to defeat V. Vishal 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the boys’ under-14 event in the UCMAS-Singaram Pillai all-India junior tennis tournament here on Monday.

Well Knit wins

Well Knit (C.R. Badrinath, R. Krishnan, C. Krishnan, D. Vijay, R. Venkatesh) won the Swiss league in the K.J. Seetharaman memorial bridge tournament at Madras Gymkhana Club last weekend. Boaz team (T.M. Suri, P.D. Boaz, R.M. Kumarappan, S.R.S. Sastry) finished first in Board-a-match.

Kishore is Brakes’ hero

D. Kishore Kumar won both his matches and enabled Brakes India defeat Shalimar Paints 3-2 and enter the knock-out phase in the men’s second division of the eighth Tribology-CTTF inter-institution table tennis tournament here recently.

Mylapore Times, which finished on top of the table, will meet Brakes India, while East Coast Constructions will take on Cognizant in the other semifinal. The semifinals and finals of all the divisions will be held at the Montfort Stadium, Santhome, on February 24.

Das-Sinha bag trophy

The pair of Dhananjaya Das and H.K. Sinha (+9 points) won the doubles golf tournament held at Madras Gymkhana annexe in Chennai on Sunday.

V.P. Ghanesh and P.S. Jagdish (+8) finished second.

Kancheepuram girls claim title

The Kancheepuram girls triumphed in the second State sub-junior throwball championship at Krishnagiri, beating Erode 7-15, 15-4, 15-12.

Refurbished TNSA clubhouse inaugurated

A refurbished Tamil Nadu Sailing Association’s (TNSA) clubhouse was inaugurated by the Chennai Port Trust Chairman, K. Suresh, at a function here on Sunday.

Freshly plastered and painted walls, tiled floor, a partitioned committee room and a concretised boat yard and slipway all now feature in the new TNSA clubhouse.

Having recently imported 28 optimist boats from Singapore, the TNSA has allotted one boat to Kumaresan, a youngster from the fisherman folks, who has been performing well in the National regattas.
