Baidashree award for Peter Claus

Udupi: The Brahmabaidarkal Samskritika Pratishtana has chosen Peter J. Claus, Professor Emeritus, Department of Anthropology and Asian Studies at California State University, U.S., for its Baidashree Literary Award to be presented here on Wednesday. A press release issued by the pratishtana stated that the Baidashree award would be presented to him by MLC V.S. Acharya.

Prof. Claus has been chosen for the award for giving a new dimension to Tulu folk study. Prof. Claus has done a special study on “Seri” rituals and other aspects of Tulu culture.

A book, “Epic of the Warriors” (“Koti Chennayya Pardana”), original Kannada version edited by Damodara Kalmady, translated into English by Shankaranarayana D. Poojari, would be released by Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha.

Director of National Folklore Support Centre, Chennai, M.D. Muthu- kumaraswamy, and folklore research scholar, Regional Research Centre for Folklore Performing Arts, S.A. Krishnaiah, would be the chief guests.

Student researchers from India and Germany who are in Udupi to study Tulu culture, are invitees to the programme, the release added.
