New role: Inspector General and Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan felicitating students who have undergone training, in the city on Tuesday. MADURAI: Hundreds of school students, including girls, were given training and inducted for Road Safety Patrol by the city police here on Tuesday. The scheme was launched under the directions of the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) K. Vijay Kumar to minimise road accidents in the State. The scheme aims to train students and teachers on road safety and traffic rules. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan said that traffic discipline was imperative to avert road accidents. Students were exposed to traffic signals, signs and rules in the training programme. They were apprised of precautionary measures to be taken while crossing roads and boarding buses. CM adviceThe Chief Minister was concerned over increasing road accidents and had directed police officials to take urgent steps to minimise accidents, he said. Mr. Nandabalan said infusing traffic sense in young minds would go a long way in minimising road accidents. Handbooks containing various road safety aspects were distributed to students. The police were doing their best to prevent accidents. Three more one-way routes would be introduced soon in the city, he added. Quoting a survey, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Armed Reserve) K. Veerasekharan said that a majority of road accidents in the country occurred in Tamil Nadu. Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Prabhakaran and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) S. Jayakumar spoke. Students who took part in the programme were given caps, whistle and other tools required for traffic regulation.
