GUNTUR: In a shocking incident, two women attempted to immolate themselves at their houses at Gollapalem village in Chebrolu, after they were allegedly humiliated by bank officials. There was mild tension as the villagers protested after the officials threw away household articles. A couple of farmers from Gollapalem, Ramisetty Raghavaiah and Ramisetty Rammohana Rao, borrowed Rs. 1.5 lakh loan from a leading national bank in 2001. Having repaid Rs. 30,000 earlier, on February 6, they repaid another Rs. 38,000. On Wednesday, some bank men forced their way into their houses and reportedly abused the women. They even threw away some household articles despite the women promising to repay remaining amount. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
