TIRUCHI: Work on expansion of Central Bus Stand, taken up by Tiruchi Corporation after acquiring adjoining Railway lands, has been completed. The Corporation has invested over Rs.3.10 crore for the project, though the initial estimate was only Rs.2.18 crore. Construction of a multi-level parking lot, taken up as a separate project, is underway. The expanded bus stand is expected to be formally dedicated next month. The Corporation had acquired 1.16 hectares Railway land at a cost of Rs.5.66 crore after the stand, spread over about 4.5 acres, was unable to cater to the increasing traffic volume. Two main platforms have been extended by about 45 metres to raise the number of bus bays to 77 from 55. Roads in the bus stand have been re-laid and a new entrance has been provided on the V.O.C.Road. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
