CHENNAI: The Revenue Bar Association has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Union Government to forward the names of those who have been cleared by the Supreme Court collegium to the President for appointment as Judges of the Madras High Court. In its petition, the association said although five names were cleared by the High Court and the Supreme Court, only three names were forwarded to the President and warrants of appointment were issued. The names of K. Kannan and S. Sathyanarayanan were not forwarded to the President even though all the procedural formalities and legal requirements were fully complied with. The omission was inexplicable and constituted a serious lapse of constitutional duty by the Union Government. A Bench comprising Justices S.J. Mukhopadhaya and M. Venugopal directed the Assistant Solicitor-General, P. Wilson, to get instructions from the Union Government and inform the court. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
