TAMBARAM: A 19-year-old youth was crushed to death on the spot and two others were injured when a stone-laden lorry fell into a quarry from a height of about 70 feet in Tirusulam on Monday.

The Pallavaram police identified the victim as V.Ganesan of Kannabiran Street in Tirusulam.

He was one of the three men transporting a lorryload of stones to a crushing unit.

The police said the lorry was making its way up the hillock when the brakes failed.

The driver was unable to control the vehicle that started going back and it fell into the quarry.

The other two suffered minor injuries when they fell out of the lorry soon after it began moving backwards.

The police said it was clear that a mechanical fault caused the accident.

As news about the accident spread, scores of workers came to the spot. A section of them said rickety vehicles were being deployed, posing serious risk to those engaged in breaking and loading stones.
