IOB continues winning streak

Chennai: Maintaining the victory sequence, Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), the reigning champion, prevailed over State Bank of India 4-0 in a Pool ‘A’ match of the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Monday.

All the four goals came in the first session. This was IOB’s fifth successive win in the competition.

Put ahead within a minute of the push off by M. Senthil, IOB slowly increased the pressure on the rival defence.

Rajinikanth enlarged the leeway even before the clock could touch the 10th minute. Midway through, M. Saravanakumar struck the third goal and Senthil Kumar completed the tally in the 23rd minute.

Meanwhile, a goal by Ayyappan six minutes after resumption, enabled Sports Authority of India ‘B’ beat Central Excise 1-0.

In another match, Indian Bank was held to a goalless draw by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

St. Joseph’s triumphs

St. Joseph’s College of Engineering bagged the overall championship for both men and women in the JETS 2008 inter-collegiate sports festival, conducted by St. Joseph’s College, at the campus sports village on Sunday.

In the men’s section, St. Joseph’s won the ball badminton, chess, kabaddi and tennis titles, finished runner-up in basketball, and third in volleyball and table tennis to accumulate 62 points.

SRM University finished second with 38, followed by Sons Institute of Technology with 30.

In the women’s category, St. Joseph’s emerged the champion in volleyball, ball badminton, badminton and chess, the second spot in basketball and the third place in kabaddi, tennis and table tennis. The women aggregated 52 points, followed by MOP Vaishnav (51) and SSN College (14).

Mr. Jeppiaar, Chairman, St. Joseph’s College of Engg., was the chief guest and distributed the prizes, including cash awards totalling Rs. 2 lakh. Dr. Babu Manoharan, Director, presided over the function.

S. Vignesh’s 101 enabled Guru Nanak Combines beat Kattankalathur by 52 runs in a first division match of the Kancheepuram DCA cricket league here recently.

S. Sandeep Kumar (six for 19) starred in Fine Star CC’s seven-wicket victory over Engine Valves in a second division contest.

Santhome ‘A’ in command

St. Bede’s ‘A’ was dismissed for 117 in 76 overs by Santhome HSS ‘A’ on the first day of the final of the TNCA City schools’ under-15 cricket tournament for the B. Somasundaram Trophy on Monday.

The scores: St. Bede’s ‘A’ 117 in 76 overs (B. Indrajith 35, B. Aparajith 38, S. Selva three for 52) vs. Santhome HSS ‘A’ 91 for four in 35.2 overs (V. Ganga Sridhar Raju 49 batting).

Pachaiyappa’s posts win

Half-centuries from S. Prabhu, Manikandan and Anbuarasan enabled Pachaiyappa’s defeat IIT (Madras) in the IITM inter-college cricket tournament for the K.S. Narayanan trophy.

Pachaiyappa’s 223 in 30 overs (S. Prabhu 57, Manikandan 54, Anbuarasan 64) bt IIT, Madras 152 in 28 overs (Nishant 72).

IIT ‘A’ 251 for six in 30 overs (Amit 54, Anand 61, Dharik 50) bt Vaishnav College 107 in 29 overs.

Darshan bags honours

V. Darshan (70 Gross) won the February Monthly Medal golf tournament at the Madras Gymkhana Annexe here recently.

C.V. Yudhvir (74 Gross) finished second.

Suthesh for Yomahesh

R. Suthesh will replace V. Yomahesh in the Tamil Nadu cricket side for the first two matches of the South Zone limited-overs tournament for the Subbiah Pillai Trophy. Yomahesh has been declared unfit.
