Indian Bank prevails over ICF

Chennai: In a contest that rose to its full intensity, Indian Bank prevailed over Integral Coach Factory 5-4 in a Pool ‘B’ encounter of the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Wednesday. Indian Bank led 3-1 at half-time.

Although both had ensured a berth in the super league, set to roll on February 29, the teams, former champions, staked their reputation to fight the issue.

Quick strikes

Indian Bank was up by three goals, two coming from international Raja and the other from Ashwin off a penalty corner, in about 30 minutes.

But at this point, the tie swung in favour of ICF. Paul Pandian led the fight back with a penalty corner goal before half-time.

Ramesh Babu picked up the threads after the break netting two goals. ICF levelled at 3-3, but James put Indian Bank ahead, followed by Ashwin to take the margin to 5-3. In the closing minutes, Pandian obtained his second goal for ICF.

In another match, SAI ‘B’ scored a 1-0 victory over City Police with Vinod Rayer netting in the 12th minute of the second-half.

SAI posts win

SAI defeated Soccer 2-1 in a Chennai Football Association’s senior division league match here on Wednesday.

Elamurugan and L. Surya Kumar scored for SAI, while Ramkumar netted for Soccer.

Soccer completed its engagements with six points and became the first team to get relegated to the first division.

In another senior division contest, Dhadeuse’s brace helped ICF overcome MSU 3-1. Ashok Kumar scored the third goal for ICF. For MSU, Marikanni converted. ICF (19 points) finished its quota of 11 matches.

The results: SAI 2 (Elamurugan, L. Surya Kumar) bt Soccer 1 (Ramkumar); ICF 3 (Dhadeuse 2, Ashok Kumar) bt MSU 1 (Marikanni).

Loyola triumphs

Loyola College triumphed in the Guru Nanak cricket tournament with a 10-run win over the host in the final.

Loyola’s Koushik Gandhi, who took three wickets, was adjudged the man of the final, while Guru Nanak’s U. Sushil was declared the batsman of the tournament.

The scores: Final: Loyola 245 for nine in 45 overs (K. Anand 46) bt Guru Nanak 235 in 43.2 overs (U. Sushil 96, Ashwin 56).

Chess tournament

Ascendas has launched a chess tournament where the employees working out of Ascendas IT Parks in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai will be vying for the title of ‘Ascendas Grandmaster’.

Presidency ‘A’ posts win

Presidency ‘A’ beat Cosmo ‘A’ 2-1 in the SANMAR-TNTA {lsquo}B’ zone tennis league here.

Other results: D zone: Presidency ‘B’ bt NTC ‘C’ 2-1; Gandhinagar ‘C’ w/o MMC ‘A’; Madras Club ‘B’ bt Mandavelipakkam 3-0. E zone: YMCA Kilpauk ‘B’ bt Cosmo ‘C’ 3-0.

Vidya Mandir in final

Vidya Mandir defeated Pon Vidyashram by 31 runs in the second semifinal of the PSBB (K.K. Nagar) under-10 cricket tournament here on Tuesday.

The scores: Semifinals: Vidya Mandir 122 in 26 overs (Arjun Arun 65) bt Pon Vidyashram 91 in 28 overs.

Football tournament

The Chennai Football Association-Don Bosco HSS golden jubilee inter-school under-10 tournament will be held from March 3 to 5 at Don Bosco HSS, Egmore. Those studying in fifth standard and below are eligible.

Bridge teams

The Hotel Nest Inn team comprising N. Kirubakaramoorthy, Krishna Kumar, K. R. Venkataraman, R. Kannan, S.K. Chari and N. Niranjan has been selected for the T. P. Khosla Trophy in the National bridge championships>

The GKS team (R. Subbayyan, R. N. Subramanian, P. Narayan Iyer, S. R. C. Sekar, P. Asokan and Kalyani Isvaran) will also be competing for Khosla Trophy.

For the Agarwala Pairs Trophy, three pairs — K. Krishna Kumar and K. R. Venkataraman, Sandeep Dang and Nirmal Kumar Jain and Prajwal and Vinoth Kumar — have been selected. Prajwal, a student in IIT (Madras), will be the youngest player in the tournament.

Vivekananda in final

Vivekananda beat Pachaiyappa’s by six runs in the first semifinal of the IIT-Sanmar inter-collegiate invitation cricket tournament for the K.S. Narayanan Trophy held here on Tuesday.

The scores: Vivekananda 241 in 49.5 overs (R.M. Karthick 68, S. Murali 61, D. Agnal David four for 57) bt Pachaiyappa’s 235 for seven in 50 overs (A.K. Sathish 59, Sunil Moses 49, P. Francis Rokins 42 n.o.).
