TNSP (Chennai) enters semifinals

Suriya Kumar’s goal helped Loyola College, Chennai, defeat Alagappa Government Arts College, Karaikudi, 1-0 and enter the semifinals of the 17th annual State-level inter-collegiate football tournament for the Selva Trophy at Karaikudi on Saturday.

Abinav’s 63 and his 118-run third wicket partnership with Manoj (51), and an undefeated 41 from Kausik, helped Coimbatore take the first innings lead against host Madurai at the end of the second day of the three day final of the TNCA-inter district under-13 cricket tournament at Madurai on Saturday.

The scores: Madurai 114 in 64 overs vs. Coimbatore 309 for seven in 130 overs (Nishanth 25, Abinav 63, Manoj 51, Dhanus 30, Kausik 41 not out, Vignesh Karthick 29 not out).

Rafat Habib of Southern Railway Sports Association entered the quarterfinals of the Madurai Union Club’s invitation snooker tournament defeating Sunil Mathew 82-1, 50-55, 83-13, 28-54, 53-34, 69-23 at Madurai on Saturday.

K. Jeyabalan, former Tamil Nadu State and Indian Railways basketball player and former secretary of Virudhunagar District Basketball Association died of cardiac arrest on Saturday at his residence at Virudhunagar. He was 63 and leaves behind his wife and two sons.

At Tiruchi, Holy Cross College defeated Srirangam Girls HSS by eight wickets to win the title at the Tiruchi DCA women’s cricket tournament here on Saturday.

The scores: Final (10 overs a side): Srirangam Girls HSS 34 for four in 10 overs (Malliga Mariadoss two for two) lost to Holy Cross College 35 for two in 8 overs (Nithya 17 not out).

Narasimhan struck four goals as Thanjavur thrashed Nagapattinam 7-1 in a league encounter of the regional-level hockey tournament in Ariyalur on Saturday. Ramachandran (2) and Vijayakumar (1) were the other scorers. Nagesh netted the lone goal for Nagapattinam.
