Tamil writers honoured

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Sixty-one Tamil writers were honoured for their contribution to the language at a function organised by the World Tamil Writers Association here on Sunday.

Distributing the prizes to the writers, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister K.R. Periakaruppan highlighted various measures being taken by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for the welfare of Tamil scholars and writers. He was a role model to Tamil writers and had been rendering yeoman service for the cause of the language and the people.

Earlier, Pon.Bhaskaran, former High Court Judge, released the books selected for the award.

Presiding over the function, R.M. Veerappan, former Minister and president of the Kamban Kazhagam, lauded the association for honouring Tamil scholars. It was the duty of the society to honour the writers as it was they who would take Tamil to the next generation, he added.

Association president Vasavan said the association was formed in 2002 and that its units functioned in all countries where Tamils lived.
