Student commits suicide

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Depressed over her poor performance in Class XI examinations, a 16-year-old girl allegedly shot herself with her father’s licensed firearm in her house at Saraswati Vihar here on Tuesday.

The police have not recovered any suicide note from her room.

A commerce student of DAV Higher Secondary Model School in Pitampura, Tanvi lived with her mother Sonia and elder brother Ashish in a rented accommodation.

Her father, Sitaram Taneja, a well-to-do farmer, frequently remains out of station.

Tanvi had recently appeared for her annual examinations and the results were to be declared in a few days. Around 7-30 a.m. on Tuesday when Mr. Taneja was at home, his wife received a call from Tanvi’s school asking them to come over with their daughter for a meeting.

The police believe that the school teachers wanted to discuss Tanvi’s poor performance in some of the subjects.

Mr. Taneja asked Tanvi to get ready for school, following which she went to the adjoining room, took out her father’s .32 bore pistol and allegedly shot herself in the right temple around 8 a.m.

Hearing the gunshot, the family members rushed to her room and found Tanvi lying on the floor with blood oozing from her head.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where she died within half-an-hour.
