S. Rly. ‘A’ keeps winning

Chennai: Southern Railway ‘A’ recorded its third win in as many matches with a 2-0 victory over Sports Authority of India ‘A’ in the MIOT-CHA senior division hockey league championship for the Rajaram Memorial Shield at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Tuesday.

Facing a stout-hearted defence, Southern had to work hard to weave in its forays. Success was late but it came eventually late in the second half when Lakshman Karan netted. It was still touch and go before Natarajan scored a field goal eight minutes from time to put the issue beyond doubt.

Southern shares the top spot with nine points along with ICF. The reigning champion, Indian Overseas Bank, has six points from two matches, while Indian Bank, Sports Authority of India ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams are yet to open their accounts. Both the SAI teams have played three matches.

M. Suresh rallied to defeat Poonacha 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and advance to the second round in the above-45 category of the Raju Vegesna-AISTA senior national ranking tennis tournament at the SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium on Tuesday.

PSBB Senior Secondary School (K.K. Nagar) was declared the winner by virtue of first innings lead over PSS Senior Secondary School (Mylapore) in the two-day TNCA under-13 tournament final held recently.

The scores: PSBB SSS (K.K. Nagar) 171 (Akash 60, M. Ashwath 35) and 153 (Adithya Girdhar 29, Karthik Ganesh 26) bt PSS SSS (Mylapore) 107 (Sai Prakash six for 27) and 15 for one (by virtue of first innings lead).

SRM will meet Sri Venkateswara in the final of the A.C. Muthiah Rolling Trophy inter-engineering college cricket tournament, organised by Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (SVCE), at SVCE here on Wednesday.

The scores (semifinals): SRM Easwari 104 for six in 20 overs lost to SRM 108 for no loss in 18.1 overs (H. Gopinath 65 n.o.); Tagore 71 in 18.4 overs lost to Sri Venkateswara 75 for three in 14.4 overs.

A former national champion in long jump and an ex-vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Athletic Association C. Sankaran passed away here on Monday. He was 76.

A former Deputy Chief Personnel Officer of ICF, Sankaran had a string of achievements in long jump in various athletic meets. He was a former Madras University champion and then went on to win the all-India inter-varsity title.

He represented Indian University in the World Universities meet held in Budapest in 1954. Sankaran had won the long jump event over four times in the inter-Railway athletic meets. In 1976 he had gone as the Chef-de-mission of the Indian athletic team to Colombo for an international meet.
