Profile in courage
It was in the fitness of things to pay glowing tributes to Justice H.R. Khanna, the upright judge with unmatched courage and independence, who remained steadfast in his principles even under adverse circumstances, quite aware but unmindful of the prospect of losing the post of Chief Justice (“A profile in judicial courage,” March 7).
He might have missed the opportunity to occupy the coveted post but he has found a place in the hearts of thousands both within and outside the judiciary.

Hundreds of judges come and go but only a few are remembered forever. Justice Khanna will stand tall among them for what he did to strengthen democracy in India. Millions of common men like me salute this great son of India.

It is because of the likes of Justice Khanna that our judiciary is functioning independently amid all the pulls and pressures. The best way to pay homage to his memory would be for others of his fraternity to keep aloft his ideals, doing their duty without fear or favour.

The account of Justice Khanna’s lone struggle and commitment will serve as a great inspiration to the younger generation. One must have indomitable courage to knowingly forego professional growth. Men of such determination are much needed in the present context of deteriorating human rights record across the country. Anil Divan deserves praise for the recapitulation of memories and grateful adoration to the humanistic individual par excellence.

Our power-hungry politicians who do not miss an opportunity to gain power at any cost have a lot to learn from Justice Khanna. His contribution to the basic structure doctrine and fundamental rights is of great significance. He is one of the greatest personalities India has produced. Thanks to Mr. Divan for writing such an inspirational article.
