Corrections and clarifications

  • In a report “Eight held for helping naxalites” (March 8, 2008), the second paragraph was “Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) A.M. Prasad told The Hindu on telephone from Hebri that they had recovered a single barrel muscle loader gun, 30 detonators, two gelatin sticks, naxal literature and flags and a motorcycle.” “Muscle loader gun” should have been “muzzle-loader gun”. (“Corrections and Clarifications” (February 12, 2008) had a similar correction pointing out that “single-barrel bridge loading rifle”, in a report “Armed gang walks away with firearms and weapons from police station” (Tamil Nadu, February 10, 2008), should have been “single barrel breech loading gun (SBBL).)

  • An item (PTI) in “Briefly” (Early editions, March 6, 2008, page 1) titled “Hearing on Venugopal’s plea” said “The Supreme Court on Wednesday commenced the final hearing on a petition filed by cardiologist P. Venugopal challenging his removal as AIIMS Director following the Centre’s decision to fix 65 years as the upper age limit for the post.” Dr. Venugopal is a cardio-thoracic surgeon. (We had issued a similar correction on July 18, 2006, and April 3, 2007.)

  • An item “Twin murder” (“Briefly”, Tamil Nadu, March 10, 2008, page 10) incorrectly said that Abhash Kumar is Deputy Inspector of Police, Thanjavur Range. It was an editing error, and should have been Deputy Inspector General of Police.

  • In a report “Yan knocks out Jankovic” (“Sport”, March 8, 2008) the fifth paragraph was “Late in the night, top seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia fell to China’s unseeded Zi Yan, ranked 55th. Yan’s persistent retrieval skills helped her win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3”, while the results: Singles (quarterfinals) said “Jelena Jankovic (Srb) bt Zi Yan (Chn) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.” The results column was incorrect. Zi Yan won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. (The report was on the Canara Bank Bangalore Open.)
