Sandeep Syal upsets Bhullar

NEW DELHI: Sandeep Syal beat third-seeded Gaganjeet Bhullar on way to the pre-quarterfinals of the SRF all-India match-play golf championship at the Delhi Golf Club course here on Wednesday.

The top two seeds, Ashok Kumar and Digvijay Singh, had easy passage into the pre-quarterfinals. Ashok Kumar routed Vinod Kumar 7 and 6 to set up a clash with R. Srinivas. The latter got the better of Amardip Singh Malik 4 and 3. Digvijay Singh recorded a comfortable 5 and 4 victory over Sri Lankan B.G. Lalith Kumara.

Rahul Ganapathy lost to former Indian Open champion Ali Sher. The old warhorse won one up against a player who has had quite a success on the PGTI Tour this season. Ali Sher will run into C. Muniyappa who beat Gurbaaz Mann 3 and 2.

Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing beat Kolkata’s Shankar Das 2 and 1 while Mukesh Kumar got past Sri Lankan Anura Rohana 4 and 3.

In other matches, Man Jaini beat Shaurya Singh 2 and 1, Uttam Singh Mundy beat A. S. Lehal 5 and 3, Shamim Khan beat Shiv Prakash on 21st hole, Vivek Bhandari beat Chiragh Kumar 4 and 3, Arjun Singh beat Himmat Singh 5 and 4 and Vijay Kumar beat Randhir Singh Ghotra 3 and 2. — Special Correspondent
