Vaniyambadi college gets Central grant

VANIYAMBADI: Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi, has got a Central government grant of Rs.32 lakh from the Department of Science and Technology for purchase of sophisticated scientific equipments for research purposes, under the Funds for Improvement of Infrastructure for Science and Technology (FIST).

S. Syed Shafi, Head of the Department (HOD), Department of Chemistry, said only two colleges in the State had been selected for the grant for a period of five years. Apart from the Islamiah College, the other college that had got the grant was St. Josephs College, Tiruchirapalli.

He said students from other colleges could use equipments for research work. Industries around Vellore could too use this facility. The college had fixed a nominal fee of Rs.150 and the amount collected would be used for maintenance.

Dr. Shafi said the total grant allotted for Level 1 of FIST was Rs.1 crore. Initially the college had got Rs.32 lakh for a period of five years. Based on the overall performance, the grant would be enhanced to Rs.1 crore for the next five years.
