SIT retains title

Kovilpatti: Helped by some inspired play by spikers Balaraman and Premchand, Sethu Institute of Technology (Kariapatti) retained the title defeating St. Xavier’s College (Palayamkottai) 25-18, 25-23 in the final of the third annual Southern Districts prize money Open volleyball tournament organised by Friends Volleyball Club and collected Rs.5000 at Kovilpatti on Sunday.

St. Xaviers’s College was richer by Rs.4000.

In the third place play-off match, C.K. Jewellery Volleyball Club (Tuticorin) beat Adithanar College (Tiruchendur) 25-15, 25-19 and pocketed Rs.3000.

Players felicitated

Madurai District Chess Association felicitated the following Madurai District players for their achievements in the last two years in State, National and international level tournaments at a function at Madurai on Sunday.

The winners: GM J. Deepan Chakravarthy (Indian Oil Corporation) and (Thiagarajar Arts College): became the Grandmaster in 2006, finished second in National ‘A’ championship in 2007, member of the Indian chess team for the Asian indoor games, 2007.

K. Priya Darshan (Jevana School): Asian u-14 gold in 2006 and Commonwealth gold.

B.T. Muralikrishnan (S. Rly.): TN State champion 2006.

M. Raja Darshini (Thiagarajar College of Engg.): Commonwealth u-19 silver, 2007.

R. Preethi (Dolphin MHSS): Asian u-19 silver 2007 and National u-19 champion, 2007.

S. Meenu Priya (Seventh Day Adventist School): TN u-11 champion, 2007.

A. Sitalakshmi (Dolphin): TN State u-14 rapid champion.

Kiruba H. Arasu (Lechatelier MHSS): Gold in International Schools tournament in Bangladesh, 2007.
