U.P. BJP to launch stir over price rise

LUCKNOW: Holding both the United Progressive Alliance government and the Mayawati regime responsible for the price rise, the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to launch a State-wide agitation in Uttar Pradesh on the issue.

The senior BJP leader and former Minister, Lalji Tandon, told newsmen here on Monday that the prices of essential commodities had gone up after the announcement of the Union budget.

The common man was reeling under the impact of the rising prices, Mr. Tandon said.

The BJP leader dismissed the UPA government’s claim of a populist budget, and said on the contrary it had led to inflationary trends, which had left the poor people to struggle for one square meal a day.

He said the Central unit of the BJP had already launched an agitation against rise in prices of essential commodities; now the State unit would launch a stir.

Mr. Tandon slammed the Mayawati government and said it had failed to arrest price rise in the State.

He said the prices had gone up following the imposition of Value Added Tax and the State Government had done nothing to check the prices.
